Puzzle 20

Hi!

I'm creating an archive for my puzzles, so you can see all the past puzzles! Hope you don't mind the extra sidebar content...

Anyway if it gets too long I'll try to minimize it.

Here's (the late) Puzzle 20!

LUCK AND PROBABILITY (PART 2)

Difficulty: Easy

Okay... I'll give you people a break since the previous puzzle was a "Very Hard" puzzle.

You are faced with 3 doors. One of them leads to the escape while the other 2 lead to a dead end. You are only allowed to open 1 door.

Suppose you pick one of the 3 doors. A door (which you didn't pick) that leads to a dead end is automatically opened for you. You are then allowed to switch your choice, to the other unopened door.

Should you change your mind? By how much does your chance of opening the wrong door change if you decided to switch doors?

Now for the answer to Puzzle 19...

1) It's surprisingly, 2/3, not 1/2!

There are only 3 faces which have circles on them: 2 of which are on the same card, while the last face with a circle has a cross marked on the other face. So, when you place the card face-up on the table, there's a 2/3 chance that the face facing you is one of the 2 faces with a circle that are on the same card. Hence, the answer is 2/3.

This is also known as the three-card swindle or the card version of Bertrand's box Paradox.

2) You'll most likely end up losing money :(

There's only 1/4 chance of you getting tails 2 times (NOT 1/3!). Hence, on average, for every $1.50 you give your friend, you get only $1.20 of it back.

No Joyce, you can't use any of these tricks to con people!

:)
Glen
okays i dunno what to put for the title so yea....
Anyways, regarding the class tee that we discussed this mornin, i had some fun to be honest.
But after a discussion wit mr lim with the seans, marcus and bangyong, we had came up with a design. We'll be showin u a sketch tmr mornin, so plsplspls try to come by 7:40! thanks!
Cheers,
Bryan
P.S. GET WELL SOON GLEN!WE MISS U

Puzzle 19

Hi!

Sigh... no one here as usual. :(
Moving on...

LUCK AND PROBABILITY (PART 1)
Difficulty: Very Hard

Don't worry, this isn't really that hard... probably.
There are a total of 2 questions to solve.

1) There are a total of 3 cards.

One of the cards has a circle marked on both sides.
The second card has a cross marked on both sides.
The last card has a circle marked on one side and a cross marked on the other side.

They are put into a box and mixed around. You randomly draw one of the cards and put it on a table. The side facing you has a circle marked on it.

What is the chance that the other side also has a circle marked on it?

2) You are playing a game with a friend. The game goes like this:

A coin is tossed. If it's heads, you must give your friend $0.50.
If it's tails, the coin is tossed a second time. Again, if it's heads, you must give your friend $0.50.
But, if it's tails again, your friend gives you $1.20.

If you play this game many times in a row, are you more likely to end up earning or losing money?

Now for the answer to puzzle 18...

The correct answer is surprisingly, E!

This puzzle has nothing to do with vocabulary. So it doesn't matter how easy it is to scatter the items listed in the choices.

Look more carefully at the words that make up the sentence again...

"I" has one letter.
"do" has 2 letters.
"not" has 3 letters.
"like" has 4 letters, and so on...

The number of letters in each word increases by one each time!
So, that means the missing word is made up of 8 letters, and the only choice that is made up of 8 letters is... broccolis!

:)
Glen

Puzzle 18

Hi!

FINALLY... the robotics competition we've been preparing so hard and long for is over!!!!
We didn't get into the semi-finals, however :(
Oh well, better luck next year!

Now for Puzzle 18...

VOCABULARY
Difficulty: Medium

How good do you think your vocab is? Good?
If so, you should have no problem figuring what should go into the blank in the following sentence...

I do not like those people leaving ______ scattered everywhere.

A) flour
B) water
C) seeds
D) dirt
E) broccolis
F) eggs
G) cabbages
H) rubbish

Which of the above choices should go into the blank in the sentence above?

Now for the answer to Puzzle 17... Drag your mouse over the empty space below to see the answer!

They are all misnomers (i.e. cannot be taken literally).
Still confused? Here's the explanation:

A shortbread is a type of cake or cookie (not a bread).
A spanish fly and firefly are both species of beetles (not flies).
A shooting star is a meteoroid (not a star).
Prairie dogs are rodents (not dogs).
Catgut is a cord made up of natural fibres in the intestines of sheep and goats, but never cats.
Komodo dragons are large lizards.
Pencil lead is made of graphite (not lead).

Puzzle 17

Hi!

It's true that in DHS, there's no such thing as a holiday. I've been so busy lately... CCA training every weekday, IH meetings, poetry recital, not to mention the HW... :(

Frankly, I feel that normal school day now seems much less stressful...
Oh, and will someone please reinstall the cbox? Thanks!

Moving on...

WHAT'S IN COMMON?
Difficulty: Hard

Look at the following list of words.

Shortbread
Spanish fly
Shooting star
Prairie dog
Catgut
Firefly
Komodo dragon
Pencil lead

What do they have in common?

Now for the answers to Puzzle 16...

1. 6 kg
9kg divided by 1.5 (quarter of 6) gives you 6kg!

2. 8th.
If the 8th had gone bad, the person would have said "3 of the first 7 stingrays in the row have gone bad."

Puzzle 16

Hi!

This blog's nearly dead... just hope more posts will appear after our class outing 9 June.
Moving right along...

THE BARBEQUE
Difficulty: Easy

It's 1N's class outing! In case, you don't remember, 1N was the other class I did counting for during the NAPFA 2.4km run. To thank me, they have invited me to their class party! :D
We went to BBQ at East Coast Park.

1. Trevor was assigned to bring all the BBQ food to the pit.
In case you don't remember who Trevor is, he's register no. 22 and he got almost the same timing as I did in the 2.4 km run.

Anyway, as he is slow, when he got to the BBQ pit, some of the food had gone bad, especially the seafood :(

When we measured the weight of food that had 'decomposed', we found that it was 9kg divided by quarter of the 'decomposed' food's weight.

So what is the weight of the food that had gone bad?

2. We then started to BBQ! The food was great!

But soon, it was time to barbeque the stingray. We then realised we had forgotten to throw out the 'decomposed' stingrays. They were all wrapped up in aluminium foil, so we couldn't tell which stingrays had gone bad. We couldn't unwrap them as well, since they might go bad when exposed to the air.

Then, someone remembered something about the 'decomposed' stingrays. He arranged all 15 of them, still wrapped in aluminium foil, in a row. Then he said, "3 of the first 8 stingrays in the row have gone bad."

Which one of the first 8 stingrays (the 1st/2nd/3rd etc.) in the row is absolutely sure to be good?

Okay, now here's the answer to Puzzle 15!

Positive/Negative infinity. Or simply put... Impossible.

Let's assume that the distance between his house and the school is 40km.
The time he will need to take to reach school is 1h.

The distance of half of his journey will be 20km.
Thus, to travel the first half of his journey at a speed of 20km/h, he will have to take 1h.

He has 1h -1h = 0h left to complete the remaining 20km. So, as you know, anything divided by zero is positive/negative infinity, so 20km divided 0h will give you a speed of positive/negative infinty km/h. You could also say it's impossible.

:)

Puzzle 15

Hi!

Why is this blog still so stagnant? It's the holidays! Everyone should have plenty of time to post on the blog... Anyway, I'm so excited about 9th June! (It's the class outing in case you forgot) Hope everyone's enjoying their much-deserved break! :)
Oh yes, I've decided to give everyone a week's period to think through the "Very Hard" puzzles. Hence, from now on, after every "Very Hard" puzzle, I will only post another puzzle a week later, so you all can have enough time to ponder and solve the puzzle.

Okay, here's Puzzle 15!

LATE

Difficulty: Medium

Disclaimer: Any similarities to actual events in this puzzle are purely coincidental.

One day, Mr. Lim was driving from home to school. He estimated that he would have to drive at an average speed of 40km/h if he were to arrive in school on time.
For some unknown reason, his car only drove at an average speed of 20km/h during the first half of his journey.
What must the speed of Mr. Lim's car be for the second half of the journey in order to arrive in school on time?

This puzzle may be short, but it might not be sweet...
While you ponder over the puzzle, here's the answer the 3rd "Very Hard" Puzzle 14! Drag your mouse over the empty space below to reveal the answer.

Wow... Puzzle 14 was quite a hard puzzle... O.O

The answer is 134! Look below for the long explanation...

What is the only number on the faces of the dice, which however flipped, looks the same? 96! Hence, you can use 96 to identify the 2 different dice.

The die on the left in the first figure and the die on the right in the last figure are the same (We'll call it Die 1)! Also, the die on the right in the 1st figure and the die on the left in the last figure are the same (We'll call it Die 2), but notice that even though two of their faces appear similar, the other numbers don't match! So they are actually opposite views of each other! You should have something like this...

You have the full net of Die 2! Now, you know the no. underneath Die 2 in the 1st figure is 16/91, and the no. in the last figure is 68/89. Although you can't tell which is which no. in the latter, but you can in the former!

152 - 16 = 136 (X)
152 - 91 = 61 :)

Thus, the no. underneath Die 2 in the 1st figure is 91, and the no. underneath Die 1 is 61!

Now, try to match the net of Die 2 (the one above) to one of the dice in the 2nd figure.
You'll find that it matches to the die on the left, so the die on the right must be Die 1! However, when you try to match the die on the right to the net of Die 1, you'll find that there are 2 possible nets for Die 1... We'll just have to test them out one by one...

1st possibilty

BUT...
In this possibility, the no. underneath Die 1 in the 1st figure will be 66/99, NOT 61!
Hence, this is not possible.

That leaves the 2nd possibilty for the correct complete net of Die 1:

Now we have the nets, but we don't have the values of the no.s!
We'll just have to figure them out one by one...

Remember? Underneath the 2 dice in the 1st figure is 61 (Die 1) and 91 (Die 2).
So, we have this...

The underline shows which way up the no.s should be.
Other than differenciating 61 and 91, it can also differenciate 19 too, since all no.s are different, and 19 looks like 61 when flipped around.
Using this method we can differenciate most of the no.s!

Now, let's look at the no.s underneath the dice in the 2nd figure.
They are: 68/89 (Die 1) and 66/99 (Die 2).

Only 89 and 99 add up to 188, so here's what you should have...

Now, let's try to get the answer...

As we already know, in the last figure, Die 1 is on the right and Die 2 is on the left.
Underneath Die 1 is 66. Underneath Die 2 is 68.

Hence, when added together they give an answer of... 134!

I KNOW... it's super long and complicated, I don't blame you for not getting it the first time. You can e-mail me if you need any clarification.

P.S. The two possibilities of the net for Die 1 was an unexpected error. I didn't notice it until I was typing out the answer. Luckily, it didn't turn out to be a major error. :)

Songs :)

hellos peepo :)

heres an awesome song for u guys with the lyrics below :) cherish wat u have~

Verse 1
It was two weeks after the day she turned 18
all dressed in white, going to the church that night
She had his box of letters in the passenger seat,
six pence in his shoe
something borrowed something blue
and when the church doors opened up wide she put her veil down trying to hide the tears oh
she just couldn’t believe it
she heard the trumpets from the military band and the flowers fell out of her hands

Chorus
Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I cant even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Verse 2
The preacher man said let us bow our heads and pray
lord please lift his soul and heal this hurt
then the congregation all stood up and sang the saddest song that she ever heard
then they handed her a folded up flag and
she held on to all she had left of him oh and what could’ve been
and then guns rang one last shot and it felt like a bullet in her heart

Chorus
Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
I can't even breathe
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go
I was counting on forever, now I'll never know
Ohh i'll never know
It's like I'm, looking from a distance, standing in the background
Everybody's saying, he's not coming home now,
This can't be happening to me
This is just a dream

Oh this is just a dream
just a dream, ya

Puzzle 14

Hi!

So, how was everyone's HBL? I didn't really enjoy it... I would have much preferred being in the classroom. I still have to finish the L.A. Intro and Conc. Paragraphs AND the Maths Shinglee WB... I got too busy with the HBL and had no time to post this week's puzzle, which is why I pushed the posting date forward by 1 day. For this puzzle, I'm expecting low participation, since no one posted their answers for Puzzle 13 under the "Comments" (I guess it must've been to frustrating). By the way, this is:

~THE BLOG'S 180TH POST!~

Right, moving on to the puzzle...

DICEY PROBLEM (PART 2)

Difficulty: Very Hard

Note: Unlike previous puzzles, the pictures are sketches. If you can't see them properly, you can ask me for clarification.

I have with me 2 dice. They're kind of special... you'll see what's special about them when I give the dice a throw...

I know what you're thinking... which way up are the numbers supposed to be? Is it 68 or 89? Is it 99 or 66? That's what makes the dice so special. I can't tell you, but what I can tell you is this: the sum of the 2 numbers at the bottom of each dice is 152.

Let's give them another throw...

Did the dice swap positions? Sorry, I don't know. All I know is that all 12 numbers on each face of the dice are different, and that the 2 numbers at the bottom add up to 188.

Now for one last throw...

There, you've seen enough. Now for the question... what do the numbers at the bottom of each dice now add up to?

Yes, now you see why I expect low (0, actually) participation for this puzzle... While you vex yourself over this puzzle, here are the answers to the frustrating and probably unlucky (since it does have the word "die") puzzle 13! Drag your mouse over the empty space below...

1. B
The way the "no. 2 dots" in A is facing is incorrect.
The way the "no. 3 dots" in C is facing is wrong.
D is not even possible.

2. D
Don't get distracted by all the 2s, 3s and 5s in nets A and C. You ought to do the simpler ones first.

3. C
The colour of the gray face in C is a slightly lighter shade than the gray face in the net. :P

4. E
Here's the net of the 4 other dice...

DISCLAIMER: There might be other plausible nets, so E might not be the only correct answer...

Hello 1K! :D

I haven't posted in a long while, or even checked the blog but when I came back...
I saw spams in the cbox & 'non 1b' & 'non 1k', (I have deleted them.)
Which is why I feel a VERY strong urge to post.
Is this really necessary?
We're all dunmanians, what's more in the same level,
We will have to interact with each other a whole lot for the following years.
What's the point of fighting, quarreling, criticizing or putting each other down?
Wouldn't it be better if you were at peace and have fun with people instead of wasting your time hating?
Hate is a very strong, horrible feeling.
Let it go.
If people have done you wrong, then be the one who's sensible enough to forgive.
I know it can be hard to forgive at times, but you can always try.
When you forgive, you can set yourself free from all the feelings you may harbour; anger, hurt, disappoint etc.
Of course..
It's your choice, your decision.
There are times when we have to give in and compromise.
What are you going to do if you meet people you dislike when you grow up?
Waste your whole life hating?
Why not try to get along?

Peace, not war.

Wm.

P.S. If 'non-1b' or 'non-1k' starts to insult again, I'm just going to delete th messages.

Randomness ;)

Hi guys!

(Guys refers to the absoluteness of humans, not specifically males.)

The utter randomness of this post.

My Saturday:

I had CCA in the morning so I was this casualty who was unconcious. I slept 6 times during CCA :D so glad I did. Then, it was time to go home! I ate lunch with Vinnie and Chan Ming. Then, I took bus home. I was super sleepy. Vinnie and I nearly missed the stop. We got up the train. We became inconsiderate citizens and sat on the seats. We slept. We took bus home. Different bus. I slept on the bus and this aquaintance of my mum woke me up :D. Then on Vinnie's side, she nearly missed her stop but she didn't :D (Although...) I slept the moment I reached home. (Until 7.35pm) Then I ate dinner (took me 2 hours cause I bathed till 8pm, ate a burger till 8.15pm, drank bubbletea till 8.45pm and finished the suhi at 9.30pm. Then I came online to do 3rd language stuff. That's how I my saturday passed.

And my Sunday (tomorrow):

Leave for Sherlyn's house at 8.30am. Reach there at 10am. (Or earlier.) Do stuff at her house. Play her wii. Ransack her house. Eat dinner. Leave her house. Go home. It'll be 9pm by then.

Puzzle 13

Hi!

Sorry, I've haven't been posting for the last week, just been too busy (IH task, homework and all), and if I've been "depriving" you of a little fun, so I posted this puzzle 1 day ahead of the normal release! Maybe I should have posted this puzzle on Friday (the 13th)... Unlike the myth/phobia associated with this puzzle's numerical count, this puzzle won't be unlucky, or that hard, but it can be quite frustrating. You'll see what I mean when you see the puzzle for yourself...

DICEY PROBLEM (PART 1)

Difficulty: Medium

There are 4 questions to solve in total.
Please note: I know the faces of the dice aren't all the correct shape and some of them don't really match, but just imagine them as perfect squares of the same size and that they do match.
If you can't see the pictures clearly, click on the picture to get a better resolution.

1. Look at the following net.

Which of the following dice can be made from the above net?
Note: This isn't an ordinary die net; its opposite sides DO NOT all add up to 7!

2. Look at the following die.

In case you can't tell, the no. above 5 is 2 and the no. next to 5 is 3.
Which of these is a possible net of the above die?

3. Look at the following net.

For once, something in my puzzle is coloured and not in black-and-white!
Which of the following dice cannot be made with the above net?

4. Look at the following 5 dice.

4 of the dice are made from the same net. Which dice is made from a different net?

Yes, these kinds of questions can be quite frustrating.
To see the answer to the 2nd "Very Hard" Puzzle 12, drag your mouse over the empty space below!

The rebuses were interesting, weren't they? But they can be quite difficult to guess. Here are the long-awaited answers!

1. Mixed number
It's the word "NUMBER" mixed up.

2. Red-letter day
The word "DAY" is in red.

3. Reverse psychology
The word "PSYCHOLOGY" is reversed.

4. Square meal
The word "MEAL" is written in a square form.

5. Beeline
A line of Bs, hence B line (beeline).

6. Split end
The word "END" is split.

7. Read between the lines
The words "READ HERE" can be found between the lines.

8. Crossword
The word "WORD" is crossed.

9. First aid
The arrow is pointing to the "AID" first in line.

Rebuses are fun, aren't they :D? Maybe I should make some Chinese ones...
