See, it's manageable ;)

You can't actually revise for the 2 LA tests on week 8.
Art project and IH are just projects.
See you are left with 4 tests ;) [including poetry recital]

Oh and a chinese project is coming up ;)

28th April 2011

Puzzle 10

Hi!

Wow, this is already the 10th puzzle!
Test period is coming up soon... be prepared! I'm guessing why this blog is so dead... Everyone must be studying hard. Well, be sure to revive this blog once tests are over!
Moving on...

WORD LIST
Difficulty: Hard

Below is a list of words.

Cwm
Fjord
Banks
Glyph
Vext

In case they sound too chim to you, here are their definitions.

Cwm: A U-shaped valley formed by erosion of a glacier
Fjord: Also fiord; a sea that comes into a valley between high cliffs, especially in Norway
Banks: The sides of a river channel
Glyph: Symbols which appear to be characters of a language (E.g. Hieroglyphs)
Vext: Also vexed; the (less common alternative) past tense of vex

Oh dear, it seems that I accidentally missed out one word from the list of words above.
What is the missing word?

Incidentally, a glen is a deep, narrow valley, especially in the mountains of Scotland and Ireland.

Now, drag your mouse over the empty space below for the answer to Puzzle 9!

Trevor finished in the fifth/last position. Below are the full details of the results:

The first person was Dylan. He was register no. 27 and finished in 11:10. That's quick!
The second person was Helen. She was register no. 14 and finished in 13:12.
Jessica came in third. She was register no. 31 and her timing was 14:55.
Kevin finished in the fourth position. He was register no. 9 and finished with a timing of 15:40.
Trevor was last. He was register no. 22 and finished in 17:39.

Well, now I know at least one person in Year 1 finished with roughly the same timing as me :)

Remember, this is highly confidential, so please keep it a secret! :X

Hi!

No messages here today... :(
Moving right on...

NAPFA TEST
Difficulty: Medium

Remember I was sick during the NAPFA test? It probably wasn't the virus that was spreading, I had no symptoms of fever :). I did counting for all of you people. I also counted for 5 students in 1N, who were absent for their test the day before.

It's highly confidential, but I'm willing to share with you their timing! Just don't tell anyone :X. Of course, I won't tell you directly! Here are the details...

  • Register No. 31 had a timing of 14:55.
  • Helen wasn't Register No. 22, and she has a register number smaller than 30.
  • Dylan was Register No. 27.
  • Jessica had a timing of 14:55.
  • Register No. 14 wasn't the first.
  • Register No. 9 finished three places after the person with a timing of 11:10.
  • The person with a timing of 13:12 was second.
  • Kevin wasn't Register No. 22 who finished with a timing of 17:39.

Now for the question... What position did Trevor finish in?

I suggest you take out a pen(cil) and paper to solve this puzzle. It's much easier that way.

P.S. Don't ask me for your NAPFA timing!

Now for the answer to Puzzle 8. Drag your mouse over the empty space below to see the answer!

Mr. Brown, lives in Apartment 1. The other possible apartment he could live in is Apartment 4.

Mr. Green, Mr. Blue, Mr. Yellow, Mr. Grey and Mr. Red live in Apartments 4, 5, 3, 2 and 6 respectively.

Now at least Sherlyn can rest easier :P.

Lost & Found

Well, technically this isn't spamming the blog (according to Joyce), and I can't send this over the DHS mail (spamming), so:

LOST & FOUND

Remember the message I sent reminding everyone about the Science test the next day on Tuesday? And the postscript wrote that I lost my blue water bottle outside Science Lab 2?

The Story So Far...

Well, Bang Yong found it and gave to Bryan, our chairperson.
That's where things started to get fuzzy.

On Wednesday, when I asked Bryan about my water bottle, he claimed it was at the SSC. I went there, but it wasn't there. When I told Bryan about it, he looked surprised and told me he will help me look for it after school.

On Thursday, Bryan told me he couldn't find my water bottle. He thinks he left it at the canteen or something on Tuesday.

My blue water bottle is a Nalgene bottle (I think). It looks worn and scratched. It has an outdated sticker at the bottom of it with my name and "Pr. 4E", which was my Primary 4 class. I wasn't bothered to change it.

Last seen
(Definite): Outside Science Lab 2
(Inconclusive): SSC/Cateen

If anyone sees it, please inform/give it to me immediately. Your help will be appreciated. If I'm feeling generous, I might give you 5 milli-dollars. :P

Please note: I'm not personally attacking Bryan. I'm just informing everyone.

:)
Glen

P.S. Coincidentally, I've been seeing a Year 1 girl who has the same type of water bottle as me. That was before I lost my water bottle.

Puzzle 8

Hi!

Sorry, I've let this puzzle slip my mind. Tests and homework recently... Anyway, have a good Good Friday! Sounds weird... Today I only have time for a quick puzzle, so it should be easy too. Here's the puzzle:

NEIGHBOURS

Difficulty: Easy

In a 2-storey flat lives 6 neighbours: Mr. Green, Mr. Blue, Mr. Yellow, Mr. Grey, Mr. Red and Mr. Brown (:P). Their flat's plan is drawn below.

The construction workers accidentally mixed up all the apartment numbers when they were building the apartments which is why the number is not in numerical order.

Here are some clues as to where the occupants live:

  • Mr. Grey does not live in the middle apartments and has a lower apartment no. than Mr. Blue.

  • Mr. Green lives directly above Mr. Yellow, but does not live next to Mr. Blue.

  • Mr. Red's apartment no. is 4 more than Mr. Grey's.

Where does Mr. Brown live if, out of 2 possible apartment no.s, his one is the less of them? Sherlyn might want to find out...

Here's the answer to last week's Puzzle 7:

1. They are (according to their numbers) 28, 32, 52, 78, 44 and 39 years old respectively. Read below for a method to find out their ages:

No. 4 is obviously lying since his age is over 40 and a multiple of 13.
So No. 2 will be lying too since he says that No. 4 is 68 (a truthful age) when No. 4 is lying. Since he says he is not 32, and he's lying, that means he is 32.
No.5 is telling the truth since he correctly pointed out that No. 2 was lying. So No. 1 is 28.
No.1 is telling the truth since he's 28 (less than 40, multiple of 7). Now we now that No. 6 is 39 years old (28 + 11), and that No. 4 is 78 (the only multiple of 13 from 70-80, liar remember?).
No. 6 is lying, so No.3 is lying too. No. 5 is younger than him by 8 years.

Now we need to find the ages of No. 3 and 5.
The total age of them is 96 (273 - 32 - 28 - 39 - 78).
We also know the difference between their ages. Using simple maths, we find that:
No. 3 is 52 and No. 5 is 44.

There's the method!

2. The code is 48.

1 must be correct since all multiples of 32 above 100 are not factors of 192 (violation of 2nd clue).
2 must be correct since all multiples of 32 below 100 are all factors of 192!
3 must be correct or else 1 will be wrong too.

That leaves us with 4. So it must be wrong. After finding out all its factors, there are 4 possible numbers that fit clues 1, 2 and 3: 12, 24, 48 and 96.
Remember, when the digits of the code are added up together they make 12, ao the code is 12!

...You finally figured out the code! You input the code into the bomb. It immediately shuts off. Wait a minute... if the door was locked why was there a need to wire it to the door? You look at the bomb more closely and realise... it's not even a bomb! It's an automatic locking device! The countdown shows how long more you had to wait before the door opens! Now that you input the "emergency off" code, well, there's no way of turning it back on again. Well, it looks like you're trapped in there for eternity, at least, until Monday comes.

MRT encounter xD

Heyys peepo xD

Today's post is abt the amazing encounter po chien, glen, glenda(yes, their names are amazingly alike xD), me and a few other dunmanians encountered at the bishan MRT station after our third lang classes(and yes, i DO take public transport and go home by myself, stop thinking that im very pampered :P).

I've always wondered how in the world the MRT trains were always able to stop so accurately at stations, with their doors aligned to those on the platforms. i've also always wondered if they actually EVA make a mistake and the doors were not in place.

HAHs. and today, i proved my assumptions correct! xDDD LOLs when the train stopped today, it was totally outta place and the doors weren't aligned. the train tried countless times to reverse to get the doors aligned but to no avail. so as the commuters stared on helplessly, both on the train and platform, the peepo in charge were trying their very best to solve the prob. sadly, the trains on circle line doesnt hav drivers(?) controlling them(according to my cute fwen, glenda), so the prob wasn't able to be solved efficiently. it was quite worrying too as the nest train was abt to arrive and po chien was like "OMG!" cos well, for all we noe, this might actually cos a "train crash". fortunately, this didnt happen :D All the while, when the train was reversing continuously for 10mins to get in place, i was like thinking, "Why dont they just proceed on to the next station rather than wasting everyone's time doing stuff that dont work? then the commuters who were to alight at this station could just take another train back..."

And so, we waited and waited but the train was still pretty stuck at where it was. eventually, they gave up and just moved on to the next station. HAH, see, my suggestion was the most ideal one after all xD the next train came and (luckily) the doors were aligned properly. they opened and commuters started pushing their way in(typical singaporeans). Just as i was abt to enter, without warning, the doors suddenly slammed shut, closing on the haversack of a guy infront of me(but he still managed to get in safely though) Thankfully, i wasn't they type who would push my way in(im a good citizen :) or else, if i had been a second earlier, im pretty sure that i'll be the one smashed between those metal doors and u guys wont be seeing me for quite a few days xD A lady standing nearby had her sandal stuck under the metal door(on the platform, not train) and was unable to move her foot. fortunately, the door worked again and closed, somehow freeing her foot.

This encounter was pretty cool and thankfully, no one was hurt. It has also proved that accidents really do happen. hence, we should actually be grateful abt the times when we're able to travel in public transport safely. so, remember, do not take anything for granted :) appreciate what we have ;)

Optical Illusions

Sorry, don't get excited by the title. It's rather disappointing. As the title suggests, I would like to post some optical illusions from a book I just borrowed from the library. I adore optical illusions (they're like puzzles where you don't have to use your brains so much) and apparently so does Mrs. Koh. It has illusions such as length distortions, afterimages and how to make 2-D objects into 3-D! Yes, all you need to do is follow the instructions and use your eyes!

Sadly, it appears I would be infringing copyright. :(

Never mind, at least you can still borrow the book from the library. It's called "Can you believe your eyes?: Over 250 illusions and other visual oddities" by J.R. Block and Harold E. Yuker. It's a thick red book which you've probably seen me reading recently. I found it at the Maths Sphere! Strange...

:)
Glen

P.S. No, I did not get my puzzles from this book, in case you were wondering.

;)

How did you all find that effective method?

Although I do admit it isin't very nice cause I dropped my buttons before -.-"

Anyways, here is an update of the coming tests:

Science - 20th April
Geography - 21st April
Ting Xie - 21st April (After Geography Test)

:O Did anyone try the effective method? DO TRY ;)

Puzzle 7

Hi! At long last, the biweekly puzzles have returned! Apologies as I was too busy last Wednesday... Anyway, if you didn't like last week's puzzle you're going to hate this puzzle. This is not only about logic, but also about maths. (That's right Joyce -- I'm referring to you!) It's LOGICAL MATHEMATICS! Actually most of maths is logical, so maybe it should be mathematical logic? Never mind, here's the puzzle!

LIAR, LIAR (PART 2)

Difficulty: Hard

There are 2 questions to solve in total.

1. 6 mathematicians gathered around a table and discussed about their ages. There is a peculiar condition about this group of mathematicians. Those whose ages are above 40 are truthful unless their age is a multiple of 13. Those whose ages are below 40 are lying unless their age is a multiple of 7. Each of them said:

1. Number 6 is older than me by 11 years. Number 4 is at least 70 years old.
2. Number 4 is 68. I am not 32.
3. I am 44. Number 5 is older than me by 8 years.
4. I am 65.
5. Number 2 is lying. Number 1 is 28.
6. Number 3 is telling the truth.

None of the mathematicians are over 80 years old. Their total age is 273. Find their ages respectively.

2. You are walking home one day from school late at night. There is no one around. Suddenly, someone knocks you out from behind! When you wake up, you find yourself in a dark, musty room. You have been kidnapped! Your parents are on a business trip and won't be back till next week, and tommorow's a Saturday, so no teachers/friends will report you missing.

The windows are barricaded. The door is locked, but it is wired to something. You follow the wires and realise it is connected to... a bomb! The digital clock on it flashes on and starts counting down...

You frantically try to use your phone and call for help, but there's no reception! Carefully, you examine the bomb, to see if it can be deactivated. You find that you are required to input a numerical code. Perhaps that will deactivate the bomb!

On the floor next to the bomb is a sheet of paper, scrawled on it was:

Clues for the code:

1. It has only 2 digits.
2. It is a factor of 192.
3. It is not 192.
4. It is a multiple of 32.

Note to self:
Digits of code when added together is 12.
1 of the clues is wrong!

Quick! Before you get exploded to bits, what is the code?

Now for the answer to Puzzle 6... You know what to do!

1. Phil and David, who just happened to be the 1P's chairperson and vice-chairperson. David was also the outright liar.

2. Statements 2, 4 and 5.

3. Suspect A can't be lying since Suspect E will be lying too. Suspect B can't be lying since Suspect C will be lying too. Suspect D can't be lying since both Suspect D and E will be the shoplifters, and there can only be one.
So who is lying then? Remember the witness? He lied about the 5 suspects, so he's the shoplifter!

4. Bridgette stole the answers. Douglas was the liar.

:)
Glen

There's a lot of homework?!

Is the homework load a lot for many of you?

Cause I find it more slack than Primary School ;)

Just cope. I think that the load is manageable if you plan when you are going to do it.

Also, don't think that tests are the busiest dates.

Here's a special tactic ;)

1) On the way home, open a note in your phone and think through what you did in school today. Save your homework in a note
2) Buy a takeaway for your dinner
3) Reach home 1.5 hours after you are dismissed
4) Rush to the toilet with everything except your shoes [Dump your things down before proceeding to get clothes]
5) [Return to the toilet] Take out all your homework while doing your business
(Remember to call your parents to in form them that you are safe. Put your phone on loudspeaker) [Done inbetween Steps 4 and 5]
6) Take out your uniform and the buttons while doing your business [Even if you are not doing business, it's cool to pack your bag in the toilet]
7) Dump your bag outside and your homework and phone neatly beside it
8) Close the door and bathe
9) Bring your bag to your room and put your homework on your table
10) Plan how long you will take for each homework and what time you want to sleep
11) Sit down and think through what you did in school today.
12) Go online or call your friends to clarify any doubts IMMEDIATELY before you forget them
13) Start on your homework

This effective method can let you have 3 hours of TV and sleep at 11pm.

*Mr. LOO: It's a friendly slap

So try this effective method. It works well and you still get to use the computer for 2 hours.

Puzzle 7 News

Due to the latest "homework crisis" and problems with its predecessor, Puzzle 7's debut will henceforth be postponed to Sunday. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. At least now all of you have more time to figure out Puzzle 6.

:)

Puzzle 6

Hi!

Good (maybe) news! These puzzles might soon be migrating! Mr Lim proposed that I should post my puzzles on the noticeboard and the blog. Now you don't need to moan in boredom when you can't access Blogger at home or when you have not time to use the library computers/when they are fully used. Okay, the previous part was a little exaggerated, but you get the idea. More details will be discussed soon.

Now for the puzzle!

LIAR, LIAR (PART 1)

Difficulty: Medium

Note: Part 1 is comprised of 4 logic questions, so for those bad at maths puzzle you can heave a sigh of relief.

1. Someone has been dirtying the 1 Kejuju classroom when no one's around! That explains why our cleanliness levels are so low for this term. How nefarious! It has been found that 2 people, who are working together, have been dirtying our classroom. The culprits are narrowed down to 6 suspects from class 1P: James, Deborah, Phil, David, Andrea and Stacy. Their statements are shown below:

Andrea: Phil and Andrea did it.
David: Deborah and Stacy did it.
Deborah: James and Phil did it.
James: Phil and Stacy did it.
Phil: Deborah and David did it.

Stacy was nowhere to be found.

Out of the 5 people interrogated, 4 of them told half-truths (i.e. they correctly stated one of the the culprits, but lied about the other). The remaining person told an outright lie (i.e. lied about all the culprits).

Who have been dirtying our classroom?

2. Look at the statements below.

1: The below statements are all incorrect.
2: Two of the below statements are correct.
3: The statements above are all correct.
4: The below statement is correct.
5: At least three statements must be correct.

If at least one of the statements must be correct, which statement(s) is/are correct?

3. A shoplifting incident has occured. A witness (who, unfortunately, is the only witness) places 5 suspects at the scene of the incident. The following are their statements:

Suspect A: If D is telling the truth, so is B.
Suspect B: I didn't do it!
Suspect C: B is not lying.
Suspect D: E was not the shoplifter.
Suspect E: A and C are telling the truth.

Further investigation reveals that only one person was the shoplifter. If the shoplifter was the only person who was lying, who was the shoplifter?

4. Someone stole the test answers from the Year 1 teachers just before the test! The teachers have devised a cunning way to catch the thief. When they are marking the test scores, they look out for students who scored suspiciously high marks on the test. Six students were seen to have suspiciously high marks, so the teachers interrogated them. The following are their statements:

Anderson: Either Bridgette or Emelda stole the answers.
Bridgette: Cameron is telling the truth.
Cameron: I didn't do it!
Douglas: Anderson stole the answers.
Emelda: Douglas is lying.
Fatima: Emelda didn't steal the answers.

Only one out of the six students is lying. Who stole the test answers?

Now for the answer to the first "Very Hard" Puzzle 5! Drag your mouse over the empty space below for the answer. But actually, the image gives everything away...

Did I mention that Shawn's clock was digital? Of course I didn't, which was why I classified this puzzle under "Very Hard".

The problem with the clock was that one of its minute "light" was broken (it can't turn on).

The broken minute light (in black) is shown by the arrow. So, when it's supposed to show 58, it shows 56. Similarly, when it's supposed to show 59, it shows 55. When it shows 00 there's a gap in the 0, so that's why Brian only noticed what was wrong with Shawn's clock at 9:00.

P.S. Uncle Bob bought the clock for $10 000 because everything but the lights and wiring is made of gold.

My Orientation Day

This is my First Post on the Blog, because I uhm, didn't manage to post :/ Yeah. Okays. Thanks, Sikai for giving me the Link yeah ^^. So anyway, My first day at DHS made me really nervous. I wasn't in the Same class with one of my good friends (1L) and Tinwei (My Primary Schoolmate) didn't come as early as I did.

So anyway. I meet Jiaxuan there. But that time I didn't know her name... And I kinda knew here 'cause we were playing 'Splat' and she was beside me LOLS XD. Haha. And I couldn't tell Joyce, Vinnie and Shermaine from one another 'cause I got STM. So yeah, Sorry ^^. I think I knew Paris... But I forgot how. :O Sorry. Then I got to know Sherlyn, Wenmin and Shermaine :D

Anyway the main thing was it was fun and all. Haha. But I got lost a couple of times which was really ... uncomfortable and weird. Oh and I couldn't tell the guys apart too. 'Cause they looked pretty same if you ask me.

-Emily(:

Puzzle 5

Again, please read the following disclaimer before proceeding on to the puzzle:

Any similarities to actual people is NOT purely coincidental. The following is intended as a joke. Please do not make fun of the inferred actual people and take the joke seriously.

Now for the puzzle...

CROOKED CLOCKS (PART 2)

Difficulty: Very Hard

Shawn finally realises his broken clock is a burden to him, so he decides to replace it with a brand new $10 000 clock that Uncle Bob bought for him. He sets it at the same time as Gwen's clock (which still keeps perfect time). At first it works just fine, then after a while things start getting odd...

Brian, the butler, was cleaning the house one day when he saw something weird about the clock. To make sure, he compared it against Gwen's clock (which, again, still keeps perfect time) and noted that there was a difference in their timings. When it was 5 minutes to nine, Shawn's clock was still correct. After 3 minutes of cleaning, he glanced at the clock and it showed, oddly enough, 4 minutes to nine, but Gwen's clock showed 8:58. A minute later, Shawn's clock, even more strangely, showed that it was 5 minutes to nine (I.e. 8:55). When the nearby church bells chimed the hour at 9:00 Brian finally realised what was wrong with Shawn's clock. So much for the $10 000 which Uncle Bob spent.

What was wrong with Shawn's new clock?

Ooh... It's very difficult, even if I have to say so myself. Obviously Gwen's clock can't be wrong, and the clockwork is working perfectly fine.

While you ponder over the question, drag your mouse over the space below to see the answer for Puzzle 4...

The answer is 1:20. To find the answer, you can use the following 2 methods.

1. Find Shawn's broken clock first. Since it's broken, it can't run, so it should be the only clock that shows the hour (i.e. end in :00). Then you can try all the other timings to see which fits all the correct descriptions.

2. Find 2 clocks with a difference of 1h 40min. The clock which is faster is Gwen's clock.

Good luck!

:)
Glen

My orientation day :)

Hi I am from 1K. I'll be sharing about my orientation day in Dunman High School. The first day of school, I was kind of like late. I reached there and only had 10 minutes to spare. (About 7.30 in the morning I think)

I forgot where we went when we entered this school but I know at the hall, I was like staring at my friends in 1L. The sad news is that my other 2 ex-classmates are in 1L. Only 3 people in my class came to Dunman but nevermind, I have my schoolmates :) I saw Chan Ming and Paris and was like glad to see them cause I know them and it would be easier to interact.

Then I remembered we had a tour around DHS. I forgot who I met first. Anyway, my first impression of Vinnie was late. Lol this is because I got this disease that makes me think everyone is late and because Vinnie was somehow late on that day (cause she went to the wrong classrom I think)

Anyway, I remember Tin Wei who keeps smiling at me. I also remember Charlene and Alessia's then-hard-pronounce-and-spell name.

I remember one part we had to go to the hall (I forgot which orientation day) and then all the girls were exchanging handphone numbers. Then I sat there quietly and didn't dare to take out my phone. Cause it was in the hall. See, I'm such a good girl. Anyway, I carry my phone with me everyday now in Secondary School. Cause Dunman High is big and I might get lost. Also, people from 1K keep contacting me. Last time, I used to leave my phone under my pillow or on my table. Even if I do bring it to school when my mother says it is necessary cause I would be coming home late, I leave it in my bag. Even during recess I just take out 50 cents from my wallet to buy ice-cream or something and run to canteen. If not I'll just erm drink milk -.-" Anyway, I don't like to carry my phone and wallet along with me cause it makes my pocket heavy.

I also remember Sean Ang. Cause on the first day of school he came in shortly after me. Then came Sean Ng. They made me confused. Suddenly 2 Seans. Won't talk much about useless people. Ok, and I remember Glen and Ryan cause they were sitting near me on the first few days of school and I was staring at their name tag card stand thing. Well, I remember Marcus cause of his baby face and he likes to play soccer.

Well, I also remember Jia Xuan, who sat beside me at first :)

Erm, sorry the rest cause I left you out. There are groups for the people I left out.
Guess we weren't that close?

Well, I shall stop talking.

You can guess who I am although I think it is simple.
