Puzzle 5

Now for the puzzle...

CROOKED CLOCKS (PART 2)

Difficulty: Very Hard

Shawn finally realises his broken clock is a burden to him, so he decides to replace it with a brand new $10 000 clock that Uncle Bob bought for him. He sets it at the same time as Gwen's clock (which still keeps perfect time). At first it works just fine, then after a while things start getting odd...

Brian, the butler, was cleaning the house one day when he saw something weird about the clock. To make sure, he compared it against Gwen's clock (which, again, still keeps perfect time) and noted that there was a difference in their timings. When it was 5 minutes to nine, Shawn's clock was still correct. After 3 minutes of cleaning, he glanced at the clock and it showed, oddly enough, 4 minutes to nine, but Gwen's clock showed 8:58. A minute later, Shawn's clock, even more strangely, showed that it was 5 minutes to nine (I.e. 8:55). When the nearby church bells chimed the hour at 9:00 Brian finally realised what was wrong with Shawn's clock. So much for the $10 000 which Uncle Bob spent.

What was wrong with Shawn's new clock?

Ooh... It's very difficult, even if I have to say so myself. Obviously Gwen's clock can't be wrong, and the clockwork is working perfectly fine.

The answer is 1:20. To find the answer, you can use the following 2 methods.

1. Find Shawn's broken clock first. Since it's broken, it can't run, so it should be the only clock that shows the hour (i.e. end in :00). Then you can try all the other timings to see which fits all the correct descriptions.

2. Find 2 clocks with a difference of 1h 40min. The clock which is faster is Gwen's clock.
