Puzzle 6
Hi!
Stacy was nowhere to be found.
:)
Glen
Good (maybe) news! These puzzles might soon be migrating! Mr Lim proposed that I should post my puzzles on the noticeboard and the blog. Now you don't need to moan in boredom when you can't access Blogger at home or when you have not time to use the library computers/when they are fully used. Okay, the previous part was a little exaggerated, but you get the idea. More details will be discussed soon.
Now for the puzzle!
LIAR, LIAR (PART 1)
Difficulty: Medium
Note: Part 1 is comprised of 4 logic questions, so for those bad at maths puzzle you can heave a sigh of relief.
1. Someone has been dirtying the 1 Kejuju classroom when no one's around! That explains why our cleanliness levels are so low for this term. How nefarious! It has been found that 2 people, who are working together, have been dirtying our classroom. The culprits are narrowed down to 6 suspects from class 1P: James, Deborah, Phil, David, Andrea and Stacy. Their statements are shown below:
Andrea: Phil and Andrea did it.
David: Deborah and Stacy did it.
Deborah: James and Phil did it.
James: Phil and Stacy did it.
Phil: Deborah and David did it.
David: Deborah and Stacy did it.
Deborah: James and Phil did it.
James: Phil and Stacy did it.
Phil: Deborah and David did it.
Stacy was nowhere to be found.
Out of the 5 people interrogated, 4 of them told half-truths (i.e. they correctly stated one of the the culprits, but lied about the other). The remaining person told an outright lie (i.e. lied about all the culprits).
Who have been dirtying our classroom?
2. Look at the statements below.
1: The below statements are all incorrect.
2: Two of the below statements are correct.
3: The statements above are all correct.
4: The below statement is correct.
5: At least three statements must be correct.
2: Two of the below statements are correct.
3: The statements above are all correct.
4: The below statement is correct.
5: At least three statements must be correct.
If at least one of the statements must be correct, which statement(s) is/are correct?
3. A shoplifting incident has occured. A witness (who, unfortunately, is the only witness) places 5 suspects at the scene of the incident. The following are their statements:
Suspect A: If D is telling the truth, so is B.
Suspect B: I didn't do it!
Suspect C: B is not lying.
Suspect D: E was not the shoplifter.
Suspect E: A and C are telling the truth.
Suspect B: I didn't do it!
Suspect C: B is not lying.
Suspect D: E was not the shoplifter.
Suspect E: A and C are telling the truth.
Further investigation reveals that only one person was the shoplifter. If the shoplifter was the only person who was lying, who was the shoplifter?
4. Someone stole the test answers from the Year 1 teachers just before the test! The teachers have devised a cunning way to catch the thief. When they are marking the test scores, they look out for students who scored suspiciously high marks on the test. Six students were seen to have suspiciously high marks, so the teachers interrogated them. The following are their statements:
Anderson: Either Bridgette or Emelda stole the answers.
Bridgette: Cameron is telling the truth.
Cameron: I didn't do it!
Douglas: Anderson stole the answers.
Emelda: Douglas is lying.
Fatima: Emelda didn't steal the answers.
Bridgette: Cameron is telling the truth.
Cameron: I didn't do it!
Douglas: Anderson stole the answers.
Emelda: Douglas is lying.
Fatima: Emelda didn't steal the answers.
Only one out of the six students is lying. Who stole the test answers?
Now for the answer to the first "Very Hard" Puzzle 5! Drag your mouse over the empty space below for the answer. But actually, the image gives everything away...
Did I mention that Shawn's clock was digital? Of course I didn't, which was why I classified this puzzle under "Very Hard".
The problem with the clock was that one of its minute "light" was broken (it can't turn on).
The broken minute light (in black) is shown by the arrow. So, when it's supposed to show 58, it shows 56. Similarly, when it's supposed to show 59, it shows 55. When it shows 00 there's a gap in the 0, so that's why Brian only noticed what was wrong with Shawn's clock at 9:00.
P.S. Uncle Bob bought the clock for $10 000 because everything but the lights and wiring is made of gold.
:)
